Blink 182 - Take Off Your Pants & Jacket
The Blink boys are back and they want you to undress...
Following the surprising massive success of their last studio album, Enema of the State, many new and old fans alike have wondered if Blink 182's new offering would sound much different now that the little garage San Diego band have become TRL regulars.
The album is a bump up in agressive guitar solos and cuts that helped establish their sound, and may discern some of the more casual fans of the band who just heard songs on the radio and never bothered to listen to Blink's earlier stuff. That's also not to say though that the band is any more "punk". Sure, they have always carried an heir of punk solos and song stylings but Blink 182 is NOT punk, and their new album (which has my vote for album title of the year) solidifies that claim.
The band seems to be torn at times in what musical direction they want to go. The opener, "Anthem Pt. 2" is both rocking and poppy at the same time and will surely be a single, but it is a step up in seriousness from Blink's normal goofy lyric writing. And yet this song seems to be the exception rather than the rule on the album, for the remaining 14 tracks are littered with the same love-hate-dating-chicks motif of Blink's albums before.
Yet even here, the band seems to be growing up a little. With singer Mark Hoppus married now, his days of juvenile yet often poignant musings on the opposite sex seem to be coming to an end. Instead we are given equally catchy and thoughtful "I got the girl" songs instead of "I'm chasing the girl" tracks. Tracks like "First date", "Roller Coaster" and the first extremely catchy single "Rock Show" echo this through out the album.
And take heart all you Blink fans who crave that dirty potty mouth the band proved they had with The Mark, Tom & Travis Show, there is even something here for you with the unbelievably funny and addictive "Happy Holidays You Bastard" and the two untitled hidden tracks. These songs alone give the album it's explicit rating, but they are sidesplitting and well worth the listen.
Schizophrenic and all over the place in terms of style (like Enema of the State before it), Take Off Your Pants & Jacket winds up being a fun, silly and totally enjoyable album and may be the ultimate summer soundtrack of this year.
