Why does listening to music have to be this difficult?

Huh. I don't know what caused that problem. I've had 2 iPods, and both worked just fine - plug n' play. My latest Nano took all of 5 minutes to set up.

I got one of those cheap little one's like your friend has. An RCA Lyra I got off woot for $30. It has 256megs onboard ram and it takes external SD ram. It shows up as mass storage on my Mac at work, wifes windows machine and my linux machine at home. I just drag and drop mp3's onto it put it on shuffle and head out. No fuss no muss. It takes one AAA. I keep two rechargables in rotation.

This one is slightly nicer than mine... has 512 internal memory. Went for $30. [link]

Hey BadKitty, you think THAT's frustrating, well... try working on computers for a living. Nice article, and a cool picture too.

My theory, is that it came from a batch of lemons =( and that somebody knew it, and this is why it was a freebie for contests.

You'd never make it in the tech support field BadKitty.... try working on a piece of crap that doesn't work while being hounded by bosses and customers. :)

On another note... I never did like the way iTunes does their media library, and it's annoying how it is wanting to update every two days. I eventually uninstalled it and put winamp back on my machine.

Can you not use Windows Media Player to sync with the iPod? I'm actually looking into buying one now, and now I gots concerns.

@ Carpanza: I don't know if you have any idea what I do for a living, but I would love to know what you call "tech support". I don't think you could handle my day all day, every day. I deal with the public, and not all smart people. Mostly I deal with idiots. I have to teach them how to do everything from how to power on a telephone (can you believe people still can't figure out that?!!?) to how to set up 3 email accounts into their PDA and use their phone as a modem. All the while I am hounded by 3 phone lines with dumbass after dumbass wanting me to buy stupid shit from their company that I don't want, (like life insurance) and countless customers calling wanting to know how much a pager costs, when their bill is due, what new phones are out. Oh yeah, and all the while I am handling the six people in front of me all asking me questions, at the same time I have to make sure no one steals anything and that everyone is happy, no one feels like I am neglecting them and walks out. I have to know everything about paging, wireless service, including everything about every device and every accessory to go with every device, and every nuance of setting up home phone service. Also I have to know how to fix every problem that occurs with each one of these things. No my boss doesn't breathe down my neck, because he isn't an ass and I know my shit. If I were a fuck up, I guess he would be hounding me. And that isn't even my regular work, that is just my "extra work", I also have beaucoup paperwork and billing stuff I do as well. No, guess I can't handle tech support. NO WAY. BTW, been there done that. Job Title "tech support"- I think that was job #32 on my list of 40. Got the t-shirt, bored me to pieces.

As you can see I haven't got time to waste on stupid shit like iTunes.

Dang, Bad Kitty... what model iPod is this? I've heard of the new iTunes not running so well under Windows... strange. Can't say I fully understand, as a mac guy and all, but I've never had that kind of a problem.

You know, this isn't my first experience with iTunes. When I bought my new computer last year, it came with it and it was being a big hog and kept trying to do shit with my music that I didn't like. I ended up uninstalling it. I was going to give it another chance, however, when I got my iStupid. My opinion hasn't changed. It isn't user friendly, and it takes too much time to figure out. And maybe that is the problem...I am not a "Mac Guy". I had a mac laptop years ago I tried like hell to make it work for me. It pissed me off and I gave it away. It's so funny, my first computer was an apple that I used as editor of my literary magazine in high school in 1988. I wonder how I got lured away from apple, I loved that piece of crap! (Damn, I am old!)

Maybe 'tech support' isn't the right term. Brings up images of some slack-jawed idiot answering the phone at AOL, asking 'Have you rebooted'. Maybe doing IT would be a better way of putting it.

One of my friends was trying to get his digital camera to work with his laptop. He was pretty frustrated, and had spent hours looking at it. He asked me to take a look at the laptop. After about twenty minutes, I got it working. Then he said to me, "I'd rather run into burning buildings than have to deal with that crap again. You just keep doing what you do, and I'll do my job."

That guy is a firefighter, and I honestly believe that he would really would prefer to run into a flaming inferno of death than have to deal with that camera one more time.

I'll have to agree with you. It is shitty when they package hardware with software that doesn't work with the product, and a useless manual.

My point is that it can be done better, for much less money, with no whoring advertising and minimal time wasting. I work with crap like this all the time, and i get it, software has dumb shit, i know. that doesnt bother me. But when it works poorly and people defend it and keep trying to convince me i am a retard for not having one yet, I have to wonder. When I ask why ipod is better i get "electrolytes- it's what plants crave" Never a real answer.

I have the 30gig ipod video and I love it. Never had a problem with it. Of course mine is personalized with the quote, "People Are Stupid" on the back. maybe it's a good luck thing.

Just a note about the apple bullshit machine. The iphone is an overpriced hype machine. Dont get me wrong, the way it moves and the display is hella cool. But it isnt even 3g and for the price that is ridiculous. That way all the appleheads can go out and pay full price for the 3g version...if they even do it. And it isnt doing anything new. my phone does all the same shit, just not as flashy and at a much faster speed and 400 bucks cheaper. oh yeah and i didnt have to sit outside for 3 days in the burning sun to get it at "select" stores.
