An earthquake measuring 9.0 on the richter scale occured off the west coast of Indonesia, triggering massive tsunami's that slammed into the coasts of several countries. Initial reports said that 5600 people in six countries had died, but new reports suggest 24,000 people in ten countries, although this figure is likely to rise as more bodies wash ashore. Tourists have been reported to be trapped on islands in the Maldives while many coastal resorts in India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia have been severly damaged. [
