Yeah most of my extended family is on the western side of Sri Lanka so they, for the most part, were unaffected.

I've seen various reports from 50-60,000 so far - there seems little doubt it'll go much higher. one estimate says there's still something like 80,000+ missing. I think it's fair to say they won't know for a bit - and even more unlikely they'll ever find everyone... very sad.

I hear alot of people talking about how the Sri Lankan's don't deserve foreign aid because in the past they rejected all forms of foreign interferance. I look at the numbers. I never want these people to call America a humanitarian country again, nor do I want them to call the incidents occurring on 9.11 a tragedy.

What? Sri Lanka happens to be a close ally of the US and I have never heard of them rejecting "foreign interferance". In fact Norway is the foreign country which is helping in brokering a peace deal between the Tamil Tiger rebels and the Sri Lankan government. Believe me, Sri Lanka is the last country to refuse help. Maybe what you heard was about another of the 12 or so countries affected by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

Well if any country didn't offer help that is just extremely petty.

What the fuck are you talking about? Even if someone felt that Sri Lanka didn't deserve foreign aid (and anyone saying this is a complete moron), how would it follow that 9/11 wasn't a tragedy?!? Even if the US didn't give aid to Sri Lanka (we will), that somehow would negate the billions of dollars in foreign humanitarian aid?!?

Besides, it's my understanding that Sri Lanka has been looking to increase relations with the US.

What I heard didn't specify a country I assumed it's at least somewhere in that area. But anyway, the reporter was talking about how the tides had changed and that countries in the area that had formally banned all foreign interlopers were now begging for assistance.

I'm just saying that morons who think Sri Lanka doesn't deserve foreign aide are confused as to the exact scale of tragedy that this is. These are the same people however who tell me how huge a tragedy 9/11 was. I'm just saying that they aren't recognizing tragedies.

Now this is going to sound harsh, but we need things like this. Now what happened is terrible, and the heartache and loss felt by those effected can never be measured, but the population of the Earth, used to have wars, and things like the Black Death to regulate populations, but at the rate the population of the earth is growing we would be completely overrun in about 100 years. Having things like natural disaster are things that we need to be able to keep the whole of the population regular. I am still sorry this had to happen, Don't see this as me wishing these things upon people.

It might be the biggest sudden loss of life since 9/11 but if you consider things like the Sudan massacres over a period of time, then its not the biggest loss of life overall.

A recent study by The Lancet (British medical jounal) puts civilian death toll in Iraq at over 100,000.

UN officials list worldwide death toll from AIDS at 22,000,000.

Obviously youv'e never been to Thailand, my friend. $20 is an insane amount of money. I guess its a beautifull thing really, that $20 doesnt buy a hooker for a night, but for an entire week of servant goodness. Then you realize that hooker probably used to be a MAN BABY! :o

The AC post above was mine (not sure why my login keeps dropping).

If you look at the thread Hollow, it's a reply to Wallace who suggests 120,000 people is the biggest loss of life we have experienced since 9/11.

It neither compares Iraq/AIDS to a natural disaster, nor is it the result of a personal, mindless political stance (not sure the same can be said for your reply). It's simple 2 more death tolls to reflect on.

It's just saying the same thing as Hoochie... this is probably not the biggest loss of life since 9/11.

Iraq and AIDS are just 2 of many examples of things which have killed tons more people than the 9/11 attacked did, and the death toll from Iraq is arguably about the same now as that of the tsunami, hence the reference.

Regarding what is the single, biggest "sudden" loss of life since 9/11, all depends on your definition of "sudden", something I don't feel like getting into.

I was just making the point that 9/11 and even the tsunami are pretty insignificant compared to other killers like war, hunger, disease, etc. which don't make headlines anymore.

While I feel bad for anyone who's lost a loved one, I feel just as bad for a baby that has lost it's parents to AIDS or a cruise missile, as I do for one that lost them to the tsunami.

As per my AC post... Happy New Year.

Instead of comparing absolute numbers, comparing death tolls of disasters as a proportion of the population at that time would probably show a more alarming figure.

You have no idea about death tolls. The 1918 pandemic flu killed between 20 - 40 million

They say that over a Billion people caught the flu.

My question is this, which is worse: one person dying or two people dying? Think about it.
