He was paraphrasing because we navigate maps instead of entering them. Ties in with his commentary on the sham Sharon has made of the Roadmap to Peace since he took office. That's not to say the Palestinians are blameless in this either. Blowing up busloads of schoolkids isn't likely to earn you a place in heaven no matter which Old Skool, eye for an eye, vengeful wrath sort of fellow your God (Allah) turns out to be. But I digress.

Before we get too involved in this discussion, we need to remember a few important things about the west bank.

First, there was no country of Palestine where the west bank was. This was part of Jordan. After a failed attempt by Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Iraq, and Lebanon to destroy Israel, that area was captured along with the Golan Heights, the Gaza strip and the Sinai Peninsula. The Sinai Peninsula was later returned to Egypt.

Even before this war, many Palestinians were forced to live in refugee camps inside the 5 countries I listed above by their respective governments and forced to live in horrible conditions. Although the entire Middle East is controlled by Arab nations, none of them seemed to have any room for the Palestinians, they were basically being held in the camps for political ploy.

After the so called land grabs, Israel is now a whopping 85 miles accross at its widest point and 290 miles long....much smaller than any country in the area. Giving up the entire west bank (which probably would have happened if it wasn't for the suicide bombings) would be giving up 1/3 of the country.

As for the idea that Israel is trying to kill all of the Arabs in the area, people seem to forget that %20 of Israeli citizens are Muslim arabs who live peacefully with their Jewish counterparts.

Now for my personal opinion.....the killing of civilians on both sides is totally wrong, but there is a huge difference between targeting a militant and accidentally killing a child and strapping oneself with explosives and blowing up a bus full of civilians who had nothing to do with the conflict at all. Do I think Israel should give up the west bank? Yes, however its not as simple as picking up and leaving when there are tens of thousands of people living there, and the as long as suidicide bombers come from the west bank into Israel the military cannot simply stop their attacks on militants there either.
