Chronicles of Riddick
I'm sure many of you have seen the fairly low budget movie Pitch Black and are looking forward to this next movie with a higher budget and more of the bad man himself. The latest movie in what will hopefully end up being a series of movies, the Chronicles of Riddick doesn't fail to please.
The Chronicles of Riddick gives you a lot more action and general convict mayhem than the original.
Keep in mind this movie is set 5 years after they escape the desert planet in which everyone except a girl pretending to be a boy (on "his" period no less), a holy man with a bad accent, and of course Riddick, dies.
A lot more about Riddick comes out regarding his "story" however a lot of it seems like it was just made up on the spot and oh so transparent in the matter of them trying to come up with a half-way decent plot involving the convict who supposedly left that life behind.
The story goes as such. Not to worry, no spoilers here, it's all in the trailers....
A "race" of humans, partly dead are out there converting people to their "faith" or destroying them. But the destruction doesn't end with killing people, no, they kill whole worlds. Bet you didn't see that one coming right?
These dreaded Necromongers are badasses with some kickass technology. I meanhell, I'd give up a piece of me just to play with a few of their toys.
So at any rate they (the Necros) have a problem. There is a breed of humans that can stop them in their tracks: Furions. Guess what folks, Riddick is a furion. Bet you didn't see that one coming either.
So they drum up a story about how all furion babies are strangled with their own cords (Riddick spoke of this in pitch black to the holy man) to get the "plot" moving forward.
Now enough bashing on the silly plot-line, onward to the nuts and bolts.
I was hoping for a bit more effects regarding what Riddick sees. That whole eye-flash is pretty bdass but you don't get to see much of it. Further the whole furion story made it seem like something special might happen to sort of put them on par with the powers the necros have. I mean hell, all he did was go psycho on people like a normal killer.
Needless to say there was a lot of Riddick playing the badass, hacking folks up, being a brute, and in general kicking ass.
The end of the movie sort of left a bad taste in my mouth. I mean hell, Riddick was supposed to be a badass furion yet he was getting his ass whooped. He needed help. Further the end left out a real chance of a sequel due to the circumstances regarding a necro army at his feet.
I hope they will make more movies involving Riddick in some capacity because I have enjoyed them. Perhaps enough happened in the 5 years before the Chronicles to create another story, or perhaps he turns his back on the necros, sending them all to "underverse" or some such.
I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
I'm a Riddick fan so that was a bonus. The plot was a bit retarded but it worked. You can't beat paying 6 bucks for an early show.
Yes I'll be buying the DVD and adding it to my collection.
