Yeah now you can have a dead persons face. How do you tell someone that?

"Hey Bob you look different did you lose weight?"
"Nope just got the face of a dead guy glued to my own face!"

Face transplants have the potential of being amazingly useful to victims of horrific burns such as this young woman:

Jacqueline Saburido was a college student who was hit by a drunk driver, and as the poster says, not all people die from such incidents. She was literally burned alive and went from being a beautiful young woman to a scarred and featureless body. A face transplant would allow her to regain some form of expression, such as being able to smile - and also perhaps not many people would look at her and stare. Its amazing what science has the potential to do nowadays.

Go to [link] if you want to learn more about this heroic person and view some videos of her. *not for the squeamish*

I actually did a presentation on drunk driving using her as an example.

This photo shows how radical the change was compared to the above one:

Luckily in your country, women are not allowed to drive, so this would never happen.

The only country in the Middle East which doesn't allow women to drive is Saudi Arabia. I live in the United Arab Emirates where women can drive.

I've seen a number of programs that describe women being beaten unrecognizable (I can't recall exactly where in the Middle East it was), pieces cut off, burned alive and so on; do you see any of that where you are? The documentary made it seem like a fairly common situation.

Of course, a lot of the women weren't allowed outside, so it might be hard to judge...

Ofcourse domestic violence against women is rampant here, but it happens behind closed doors and is a taboo subject which ruins the false image any Arab government would like to portray about itself to the international public. Its one of those "open secrets" that a lot of the residents know about. But as far as I know, Saudi Arabia is the only place which officially bans women from driving.

I think the best place to find and view articles and statistics comes from MEMRI [link] - which is the Middle East Media Research Institute which also gives in depth analysis about cultural and societal norms and differences accross borders.

I think it would be great for people like her to receive this surgery but what happens when rich people like Michael Jackson decide to go to their plastic surgeon and ask for a new face.

I'm just worried about people abusing this thats all.
