I love Calvin and Hobbes, without a doubt my favorite comicstrip ever I hope "Frazz" is as good.

The comic doesn't sound very Calvin and Hobbes'ish. Who knows though...a long time has passed since the last release and a lot could have happened. The character does look similar though.

Apparently, some other people share your belief [link]
I'm not sure. I think it's possible Jef & Bill are one in the same guy. I mean, after 10 years, you would have to assume he would change his style to some extent, even if just to make it look like a different artist. With the talent he has, it's not completely outlandish.
Plus "Mallett is against rampant licensing of characters so that they appear on everything from calendars to underwear. Unlike Watterson, he believes some selective marketing may actually be helpful. " [link]
Maybe he had a change of heart *cough* broke *cough* and wanted to make up for it now, without tarnishing C&H .

THis one is totally watterson! Even with the perspective shift. The scripting is totally watterson.

Calvin and hobbes was and is by far the best comic strip ever created not just for the characters but the dialogue and the artwork. one thing i always wondered, though, was how on earth a six year old kid could have had the vocabulary of a genius but then again maybe he was and since he was always trying to hurt, bug, and fall in love with susie and frusterate his parents we all missed it. anyway i am happy to hear bill is drawing again but i kinda hope it's not for calvin and hobbes. after all a series as amazing as that was deserves to be kept untarnished he made his graceful exit and now it's forever kept in comic history as one of those jewels of our nostalgic memories. thank you bill waterson oh and lets not forget gary larson as equaly amazing but on a different level altogether.

i'm a huge fan of calvin and hobbes and personally, i don't see any real resemblance between it and frazz. frazz seems a lot less intellectual and funny. the drawing styles are different. it just doesn't strike me as work that bill watterson would do. perhaps it's all wishful thinking thats blurring your vision.

Google search for "bill watterson" AND "jef mallett". The mystery deepens...

Hmmm....is that your way of saying that I partially duplicated an earlier link? I'd think with all your riches from pawning the Rev you could afford to be a little more patient. Besides, while I did miss the earlier mention of the link, the rest of the articles also hold pertinence to this discussion.

I took the liberty of e-mailing Mr. Mallett, via the link provided on the official site, redacted transcript follows: (redacted because I don't want HolyJuan to sell me on Ebay, because then I'd have to put out a contract on him, also on Ebay, 'cuz he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.)

Obviously, I chose this question as an indirect means of answering the question posed in this forum. I figured a more direct approach might be rebuffed.

For those of you who are as intrigued as I am, Mr. Mallett's e-mail is frazzonline@yahoo.com

Certainly the style is watterson-esque, and Mallett lists Watterson as among his inspirations.

Frazz isn't nearly as funny or witty as Calvin and Hobbes. Frazz may have been inspired by Calvin and Hobbes, but they certainly aren't from the same man, IMHO.

I like people who actually follow through with something. (Seeing as I fail to all the time.)

I was just trying to be funny. No rap on you.

I'm sure they are two different people. Its just hard to let go. Especailly when you know that watterson could pick up the pen anytime he wanted to.

Frazz still has those Calvinesque scenes: [link]

The background coloring and especially the birch tree are definitely Waterson trademarks. Could have been copied though.

More information may be in a book called Dangerous Dan. by "Jef Mallett", written in the mid-nineties.
This is even more 'watterson-ish'
