Jaret, it's only illegal if the RIAA knows about it, you use K Lite, there's a feature on there that allows you to block certain IP's the RIAA is known to be scanning through. There's some things you can do, run this feature so the RIAA can never get into your computer and find out what MP3's you have...or you could even unshare ALL your files, the RIAA can't see them that way either.

Funny enough, K Lite is a hack job done by some programmer who didn't like the spy-ware and ads on Kazaa, and the RIAA is using K Lite to search for people who download MP3's...so now, the RIAA is getting sued by Kazaa because they were in possession of software which violated Kazaa Media Desktop copyrights.

Tell "Mr X" to disable file sharing if he is really worried about it. The only way the RIAA can make a case against you is by downloading music files off of your computer (even if they can see you have a list of illegal music, it won't hold up in a court unless they can get them from you). I know this defeats the purpose of P2P networking, but its better than getting sued.

piracy is the funnest and most useful feliny in the US. the answere, go to madagascare or iran where they don't abide by international copyright law.

Downloading copyrighted works are just as illegal as letting others download them. however they are only CURRENTLY going after those who allow others to download.

Another option is to DL through a proxy in one of those non-abiding (international copyright law) countries.

Thanks alot fellas. I just did an approximate inventory on "Mr. X"'s computer and found about 3 GB of mp3s. But just to be on the safe side, I'll clean 'em up a little. I have about 15 'Kermit and Big Bird Stoned', 7 'Spongebob Squarepants Theme Song''s, and, thanks to Mr. Thom, about 100 Coldplay and Beck. Heh.

But yea I respect the RIAA for making an attempt to stop mp3 piracy, I'll just dull-down my intranet experience.
