Good riddance to bad rubbish. While the hypocrite says he'll stay out of the US till the political climate changes, you can bet he'll come back with tail planted firmly between his legs the moment a new film deal comes through.

And such eloquent, thoughtful, constructive criticism of the country that made him a rich movie star: "America is dumb". Gee, now it all makes sense now- all our problems are solved! Such brilliant political commentary; perhaps France should elect him president! I'm sure the French / Hollywood elite are eating this up.

Of course the coward didn't have the balls to say such things to the media while actually living here and promoting his new movie.

Who cares what a dumb-fuck actor has to say anyway? If his acting career never took off, he'd be flipping burgers.

Donnie Brasco was a great movie tho.

You're right in that people shouldn't care what some imbecile actor says, unfortunately many people do- otherwise it wouldn't have made national news.

I hope as many Americans hear about this as possible and make their movie viewing choices accordingly. He has the right to say what he wants (in the US anyways), but I have the right not to pay $8.00 to see his movies either.

I think I'll download a pirated copy of "Pirates of the Caribbean" rather than rent it just to make sure he doesn't get any of my money.

Really, I wonder why we put so much stock in the opinion of an actor, sports star, or other performer.

What do they know? What are their credentials? Acting does not constitute some great understanding of politics (REAL politics, not NOW fliers or NRA spoon fed garbage). It does not make them experts on ANYTHING, other than acting.

Playing football does not give you instant knowledge about what is the best athlete's foot medication.

Doing bad prop comedy does not endow you with the ability to divine which is the best collect long distance.

I will say that Depp is an excellent actor, but since when did that make him an expert on everything?

His credentials aren't really important at all. If we hold that standard up for this site, then none of us would be qualified to make any of the statements we do. And if we take that qualification to its next iteration and apply it to everybody in general, then most of our leaders, pundits, media wonks, analysts, and those talking heads on CNN and Fox would have to find a new day job. When Lee Greenwood or Toby Kieth spout off in support of America, you don't hear a chorus from the Left calling for their heads and griping about their competence to voice an opinion.

Personally, I think Depp was a fool to make a statement like that. Not because I disagree with his sentiment (let's face it, most Americans are idiots. Same with folks in the rest of the world too) but because this guy works in an industry that feeds and propegates exclusively on publicity. This is the sort of non-topical statement that's going to come back to haunt him for years. Right wing talk show hosts will be lapping at this for months.

However, he's completely qualified to say what he did. Why? Because he's an American citizen.

It's pretty tough to call for an American's head for saying "I love and support America," that is if you're not an al-Qaeda sympathizer. It's much easier to call for someone's head for saying "I think all the anti-war protesters are a bunch of American-hating windbags who ought to go serve as human shields in Iraq if they love Saddam so much." Which is kind of the equivalent of what Depp and his ilk are saying.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Lee Greenwood and Toby Keith are saying anything like this. Right?

I think what makes me angriest about Depp's comments is the way he trivializes the US. He calls the US a 'puppy' and a 'toy'. Well, Mr. Depp, neither a puppy nor a toy can tear you a new one if you rub it the wrong way. Saddam and the Taliban found that out the hard way. He talks about the US as if it doesn't matter, when nothing can be further from the truth. In fact, if the US didn't matter, he wouldn't even be having that conversation.
I don't even wholly disagree with him. I think Bush is an idiot. I think the freedom fries thing was retarded as well.
I do think it's sad that this is news. Depp's experience as an actor gives him no special qualifications to comment on foreign policy. His word means no more than mine or any other ordinary civilian. Sure he's entitled to his opinions, and I am equally entitled to my opinion that Johnny Depp is a schmuck.

The United States sort of reminds me of Frankenstein. It has a lot of strength and power and can be very intimidating, but all that is controlled by a very immature, and simple, young mind. The U.S. is, after all, a very young country. It can seriously injure things by just playing or trying to help. Also like Frankenstein, we're angered easily and have giant country mood swings. I, personally, like to think that America is full of people who each think that they are superior to everyone else, thus dragging everyone down into stupidity. American people are dumb. My father owns an apartment house. He was telling one of the tenents that he was leaving town to go to my sister's wedding. The tenent asked, "Where are you going?" My dad replied, "New York". The tenent look confused and said "What's New York?" No lie. That is just sad. bah. i'm done ranting.

Well, since you resorted to childish name-calling with absolutely no intelligent commentary, I see no choice but to stoop to your level and do the same.

Anyone who chooses to live in France is an ignorant savage hiding behind a thin vernier of culture that the rest of the world sees through like used hand lotion. Your lack of hygiene is surpassed only by the complete failure your country has become over the last 100 years. Most of the world can't decide whether to hate such pathetic creatures or laugh at you. How's the unemployment rate over there? 10%? 12%? You fools enact Socialist domestic policy yet when the same policy causes economic hardship, you idiots protest the government for not being Socialist enough. I'm hard pressed to think of a single world contribution coming from France in the past 100 years. France and everyone in it could literally be nuked off the planet with the only impact being that the Brits would have to build a new tunnel.

You are all a bunch of ignorant, foul-smelling retards who only bash America out of blind jealousy and to forget about what a pathetic 3rd rate country France has become. Next time the Germans come calling, I doubt anyone would bother trying to stop them; we can get wine from California.

As for Argentina, I can understand why you left- that country sucks too. What's the matter, did the Nazi's money finally dry out you Nazi-loving retard? If it weren't for drug smuggling everyone in your homeland would likely be peasants rather than just 80% of the population. At least Colombia makes decent coffee, Argentina resorts to exporting bad beef. If France is a 3rd rate country, Argentina is 5th rate.

In short, Fuck Off fat cunt. Go choke on a snail, but take a damned bath first so at least the snail doesn't die from your stench you unshaven piece of shit. Come back when you have something remotely intelligent to say... if that ever happens.

I'm sure that if we had a more involved, calm, government system like that of ancient greece... where essentially everyone is truly a part of the government, we'd be making a lot more progress. It's true that we have been making a lot of progress, but we haven't been doing it alone. Americans have book smarts in some cases, but common sense is a rare virtue.

Fuck off with the flag waving rhetoric Hollowpoint.

Taking a jingoistic approach against everyone else is what leads to fall-in-line stepping and dictatorships, among other things.

You ALSO forget that our "civilized" country came greatly out of ideas from French philosophers during the Enlightenment. So if we are the only civilized country on the planet then we have the French to thank for that. And by the way, who gives a fuck if France is "on the decline"? That's what happens to countries you know...no one is ridiculing Britain for blowing control of 2/3rds of the world after the Empire fell.

I'm not getting into a pissing match over this and I would hope Hollowpoint (who I think is the most levelheaded and intelligent of the dittoheads that invaded Foo) wouldn't do the same either, because its pointless. I love America but I want to fix its problems too. And anyone who questions my patriotism (as I'm sure they will) because of that, should just stop and think what being an American actually means.

Perhaps the "only civilized country on the planet" statement was a bit over the top.

That said, I believe that the freedom we enjoy in the US is very unique in the freedom and success we enjoy, and as such I firmly believe we are the best country in the world. Does that mean all the others are bad? No, just that even the other democracies never quite completed the leap from a Monarchy / Dictatorship to the Jeffersonian model of a relatively weak central government, where the government doesn't grant rights but can only restrict or protect our God-given rights. In the US, it's allowed if not specifically outlawed; in countries like France the attitude is that it's permitted only if the government allows it. That might seem like splitting hairs, but there's a huge philosophical difference there.

As for my response to Kiedis, it was clearly meant to be inflammatory and insulting- nothing more and nothing less. Yes France has played an integral role in the development of the US- from our economic system to assistance in the Revolutionary War. In recent history though, they're sense of Nationalism coupled with their decline in influence has brought about the blind America-bashing we see here today.

There's nothing unpatriotic about questioning a given policy or leader- nothing could be further from the truth. Likewise, there's nothing patriotic about blindly accepting whatever policy our elected officials or unelected bureaucrats come up with. On the other hand, I believe it IS patriotic to be proud of your country- especially one that has come so far in so little time both domestically and with regard to world influence. Unfortunately, the "blame America first" segment of the political left has taken our freedom and success for granted, attempting to pass off anti-American sentiment as non-conformist intellectualism. This is the attitude that many of us correctly label as "unpatriotic".

Ricky you should avoid publishing topics that lead to racism, thats just not nice in the site...why cant we all be happy without caring about stupid things like those?

Dear Hollowpoint...as my reason for leaving my country....it wasnt the situation on it, it was one simply stupid reason for a girl...love

I fell in love, then i fought with my entire family before quitting my entire life and comming here just to be closer to the person i love. You dont have an idea of how much suffering ive gone through to come here and achieve the fact of being with him.

I do not desire to anyone to be in such situation, love someone badly and have it that far for so long.

It wasnt the situation in the country what made me quit...in fact in argentina i live quite well, i own a shop and have pretty much everything i need...but i quit everything...just because i dont give a damm if i have my love far from me.

After being away from the person i love i understud that my life means nothing to me if i dont have that person close to me...i could have gone to any place for him and i did...i dont care...and now that im here with him, im happier than ever.

Some people say that doing such a thing takes quite a lot of courage...i dont know...but i know few people who said they wouldnt have done it... i quit my family, my friends, my work, my career, my country, and i dont fucking care, because im happy with him now and im gonna start all over with him on my side.

And dont insult my boyfriend either...he did nothing to you and he is not all the things you say about french...in fact he is quite well educated and he treat me better than any boyfriend ever did in my life and he is such a nice person.

I think hollowpoint your post is quite harmful for everyone in here, i just dont want anymore stupid posts about how much "US rules" and how much "france sucks" ...that only proves your ignorance and you know it.

If you ever came to france you would see that people is not bad smelling...if you ever went argentina and eaten an asado you would see what our meat is like...and you know people in argentina have this situation only because the politicians suck bad, i am quite sorry about what happens down there...i bet you never saw a kid die of hunger did you? if you ever did you would do what i did...try to help

Instead of insulting everyone and everything, why dont you go those places and visit them when you can afford it, maybe who knows you find something you like.

We got pretty nice places to visit in argentina, why dont you google "glaciar perito moreno", "bariloche", "cataratas del iguazu", etc
I bet you would love to visit those places...specially the glaciar...thats something not to miss

About france...theres little time since im here so far Paris is just awesome and you can do anything you can imagine there, also ive been to the south of france and to the loire valley...such a nice landscape there...theres quite a lot to see in here but i got no time to see everything yet

So think about it guys stop the racism move on and live your lifes...be more open minded please

Whip, what I was referring to is the mind-numbingly trivial "Love It or Leave It" knee-jerk reaction that some people (often celebrities) have when one of their own bashes the US...even when the bashing is so ignorant that the most it should inspire is laughter. The problem is with the attitude of some American "patriots" who respond to anything critical of the US with a whiny-ass "shut up". These people believe any criticism of our nation is akin to treason; they'll say they acknowledge that while the country might have some problems, people shouldn't call attention to them or badmouth those qualities. Which is pure rubbish.

It's a mentality that went out with WWII; loose lips (about however bad a shape Depp thinks the country is in) won't sink any ships; it won't give any aid or comfort to the enemy; it won't endanger or even trivialize our freedoms. In fact, the ability to say such things, however stupid, without government rebuke or "public outcry" whipped up by Fox News is exactly what emboldens those freedoms.

Like I said, if you have something you want to discuss or criticize in an intelligent and thoughtful manner- whether favorable to the US or not- this is not a problem and I wouldn't resort to such insults had you done so.

When you make posts that consist of little more than "You guys are so stupid" and refuse to back it up... you pretty much invite attack in addition to making yourself look foolish and ignorant. To refer to all Americans as "so stupid" for no reason other than being American is no better than claiming all French have bad hygiene or that Argentinians are all impoverished Nazi-sympathizers. I hope you get that point now that that the tables have been turned.

I'm sure we could both find examples, but when I refer to the "blame America first" crowd I'm talking about all those (Hollywood types and Micheal Moore are notable examples) who's first response to any crisis at home or abroad is to blame the US.

You know the type I'm talking about- It's America's fault that Saddam gassed his own people, invaded Kuwait and developed chemical weapons because we once supported his side in the Iran-Iraq war. 9/11 is America's fault because we support Israel. World poverty and environmental issues are all America's fault because we use more than our fair share of resources and don't "share the wealth" as much as we should.... etc, etc, etc.

As an American who spent two years in Buenos Aires, in some of the nicer places it has to offer (Ramos Mejia, Micro Centro, Palermo) and in some of its true holes (Fuerte Apache, Villa 20, Laferrere, Gonzalez Catan, Ciudad Oculta, and others), I do have a bone to pick and words of support for Hollow Point.

    1) Argentine beef is AWESOME. Holy cow (pun intended), for a time I lived less than 3 miles from the main slaughterhouse in the country (Mataderos), and let me tell you I've never eaten more equisite beef in my life. The BEST plate of meat I've had in my life was in an Argentine restaurant. Trust me, the beef is GOOD.

    2) Argentina isn't THAT big into drug smuggling, only along the border with Bolivia and Paraguay, which is a small and largely less civilized portion of the country.

Had you bothered to study the history of Argentina, you would have discovered that at the turn of the century (1900), they were the 5th richest country on the planet.

Then, well, they screwed themselves over pretty much. More correctly, they had a string of very poor leadership (which the people cannot whine about too much, as many of them were democratically elected) and their luck turned on them quickly. This is really shortening the story, I realize.

I will say that I've never seen a less rational American hating person than a Porteno. Their news down there makes Fox news actually appear fair and balanced. It's sensationalized, it's terrible, and even they know it, but they don't care. It's interesting.

Why do they hate Americans so much? Good question. They love Wal-Mart. They love Mc Donalds. They ADORE MTV and all American music. But they just hate America.

Jealousy. Pure and simple. America isn't trying to hold down their country or their countrymen. America would be content if they had more money, that means we could trade more and make more money with them, but sadly they don't.

As far as anything claiming to help feed the poor in Argentina (like his sig), I wouldn't trust it. I've seen the charities "at work", and little is done but much money is laundered.

While I don't know KIEDS, just judging from what I know of his country (through first hand experience, I might add) I doubt he has walked the same streets I have walked and seen the same poverty I have seen. And I'm an AMERICAN.

I'm not sure you understand that since you have still not backed down from your "you guys are so stupid" insult.

If you have a problem with US policy regarding the Iraq war you should have said so rather that the mindless name-calling. Plenty of people- including Americans- disagree with our Iraq policy, it is a legitimate debate, just as the obstructionist policy and support of Iraq by the French government is worthy of debate.

I think this is more of a nationalism issue rather than racism.

The French are humans just like we are. We have all races (colors,) ancestry, religions, etc.

I find it difficult to pick on the French "race" as a white man with French ancestry. I can however pick on their nation as a whole because of their attitudes etc.

I may have a huge mix of nationalities in my blood but I'm an American only. I was born and raised on American soil and it doesn't matter where my parents, or their parents came from.

I find your last statement fairly ironic. If you opened your own mind a bit you would see where the irritation comes from. You plead to emotion yet you keep your own closed and have no empathy for what others feel. You choose to make an inflamitory statement, so be prepared to receive one in kind.

If you make a blanket statement like all Americans are stupid, how do you think they will react? How do you think the more intelligent ones will react? You will have a tongue lashing like never before. Now reverse the role and tell us how you would feel if I told you I thought all Argentenians were idiots that didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Or that they are out there killing their own people because they don't give two shits wether they have children laying dead in the gutters. How would you feel and respond regardless if the statement were true or false. I'd bet money that you would find your hackles rising, your defenses would be up, and you would let your emotions take over.

Of course, I could be wrong. Perhaps you unlike everyone else has open eyes and sees the truth of things. Maybe you aren't being hypocritical with your scolding and everyone else but you is blind and close minded.

    Perhaps not.

So you now say you meant that those of us who basically agree with you are stupid? When you make a post like this:

You guys are so stupid...i better not say a few things because you guys will start all over with those stupid "pro american" arguments

...be prepared to back it up- it sure looks to me like you were referring to all Americans. Either that or resond directly to the person you disagree with rather than saying "you guys" in a post about America.

Given that she didn't refer to or respond to any specific post, and those before hers were pretty tame, I'm not sure I could interpret it any other way. On a topic about an actor quoted as saying "America is dumb", she comes and says to no one in particular "you guys are so stupid"... and neglects to say any more to avoid any "stupid pro American arguments".

I suspect she's now just trying to backtrack after the spanking she was given. Note she didn't claim to be referring to the previous posters until AFTER you suggested that possibility... and note she seems to actually agree with the previous posters to some degree.

Regardless how she meant it, I was being insulted for no particular reason and without explanation- either for being American or criticizing Depp for the silly remarks he made while overseas... so I say screw her until she learns her lesson.

First off, I'm going to assume once again that when you say "you guys" you're referring to Americans.

Who told us to be the police of the world? YOU DID, along with all the other countries that demonstrate a complete inability to solve problems around the world.

It started with WWI- not our war, the US was not being threatened and we could have stayed out. Then WWII- the Japanese attacked because we were not only providing material support of the Allies, but would likely have gotten involved eventually... even though we could have easily stayed out of it altogether and not gotten involved. Are you complaining of these two examples of the US being the "worlds policeman"?

To distant of history for you? OK, let's go back 10 years and look at your own backyard- Bosnia. Again the US had little gain by going in... but we did (under the guise of NATO, since the French were blocking UN action) after watching the Europeans (who should have taken care of it on their own since it was strictly a European problem) do nothing but hold meetings and complain about the situation... they were just waiting for the US to bail them out once again.

Ten years still too far back? OK, let's look at current events- Liberia. Kofi Annan has been prodding the US to go in and restore order on our own... even though this is the very type of situation the US created the UN for, the UN has proved to be so impotent and incompetent when it comes to matters that require direct action that the US is now forced to either deal with it or watch the bloodshed continue.

I could come up with more examples, but you should get the idea by now. The US isn't the "worlds policeman" by choice, but rather because we're the only ones with the ability and the will to do what's necessary to right many of the wrongs in the world.

If not the US, then who? France? Don't make me laugh. The UN? They couldn't break up a pillow fight- they'd be too busy passing 20 resolutions on the matter. Just let things take their course and stay out of it? I think the people of France, England, South Korea, Bosnia, Kuwait, Grenada, and Liberia among others should be glad we didn't.

Not much room for debate there- either you agree or disagree; you care what Depp thinks or you don't. As for putting you in your place. Any argument which we have had in the past. Check the archives. Of course you will ignore anythign that goes against your delusional memory of events so others are welcome to do so if they feel the need to see the proof.

I have disagreed with folks on several occasions and not called them trolls. First one that comes to mind is that AC who got involved int he gun/load dispute. The guy said he was supposedly a cop. I disagreed with him. I didn't call him a trol. Other occasions are also available if you choose to look. You of course won't so it is a moot point. You are wrong, always have been, and always will be.

I would seriously advise you to rethink things before trying to jump on my case Hoochie.

In that extreme case I would say it is subjective. Hot for whom? You are trying to straw man me because we both know what I am saying is wrong. I do believe we both know that in a justified case where he is right about something I wouldn't disagree just to disagree. I probably presumed much by giving you credit you don't deserve but I did assume you were half way intelligent.

If he said he is a boy (complete with dick, chromosome etc.) I obviously wouldn't say otherwise if I had the proof.

I love America my country. I love it so much I educate myself about it and know it's history inside and out.

But since when does vowing allegance and love to Bush equate to loving America? A true Patriot always questions and never fully trusts the leaders he elected, for he knows well that power corrupts and leaders are self-interested. I love my country, I love my country's people; I am HIGHLY suspicious of it's presently highest leader, as we all should be if we are to do our patriotic duty.

For anyone that has an inkling of an understanding of world history, understands keenly that my country's power is on the beginning of the backside of it's power. All the warning signs are there, for those that bother to look or understand what they are looking at. But it didn't have to be that way, and it's not too late to fix it. Bush is giving my country a premature kick over that apex. For the most part, Presidents do not have anywhere near the power that common people think they do. (Most people just want a king.) But this president s different; he is wielding power in a reckless and irresponsible way that will affect all generations of my offspring.

When we talk about "our country", we are talking about the PEOPLE'S country. You and me. Not Bush's country.
