LXG ~ Loads of eXtreme Gonads
"I'm shtill waiting to be impreshed..." so sayeth the Legendary Sean Connery. Unfortunately that about sums up the whole load of tripe that is LXG.
Before I get into the lackluster CGI, poor directing, and shoddy script let me preface this with condolences to Sean Connery for having his name besmirched with such an awful movie...
That out of the way let us proceed...
Like many of you I saw the trailers to this movie and perhaps unlike many of you I thought it would hve been a kickass movie. I'll be honest and admit I was wrong... or rather the only ass it kicked was mine.
The film was directed by Stephen Norrington. Some of you may remember him from what he did on the movie Blade. Blade kicked ass, LXG didn't. He has only 5 known films to his name so a lot of this could be attributed to inexperience, while his success with Blade lay with Snipes, Marvel, etc.
Sadly this was one film that shouldn't have jumped on the graphic novel.comic movie bandwagon and especially not while dragging Connery down with it...
The actors did a great job with the script they had and the characters were each brought to life nicely except for Moriarti.
Unfortunately the script left the movie very lacking and as a result the success of the movie was based upon the visuals and action. Big mistake there folks...
When you plan on using CGI you need to remember a couple of things. One is hire competent people who have skills. The second, try something people haven't seen before.
The animators sucked hard dong to put it mildly. Because they had no skills they made everything painfully obvious that it was all compute rendering in an attempt to hide the fact that they couldn't hack it when it comes to cinema quality CGI.
The visuals presented in the movie reminds me of the old budget 70's-80's films. Everything was poorly done and very cheesed up.
To sum up the graphics, visuals, etc., I feel they went overboard in some areas that didn't need it, and they didn't quite make par in the areas that did. Sadly this was what they were basing their movie on so it fell short of the mark.
Now we get to the action sequences. There were a few fun ones, but overall the movie progessed fairly slow when it came to flow. One of the benefits of this type of flow however is that it disrupts space-time and 2 hours goes by really quickly - thank God for small miracles.
The fight scenes were fun but the fight between Hyde and Hyde2 was a bit outrageous and I expected a bit more deaths but perhaps the movie was geared towards the kiddies.
Nemo was a badass and fun to watch fight.
Connery was of course a stud.
The chick/vampire was sort of silly and her way of attacking was rather dull. Along with the crap CGI they used to "enhance" her character, it left a lot to be desired.
In summary, the movie is definately a matinee movie or a rental. Don't waste the premium on it, and don't expect to get much for even the cheap rates.
If you are a fan of graphic novels and comics, you may enjoy this just for the fanboy feeling but otherwise you will find it lacking and will likely want to kick your own ass for even bothering to see it.
While it appears I am very negative about this film let me tell you that not... er wait, it is true. Usually I'm very open-minded about movies, but this was shit. Don't waste your life on it unless you are a Connery fan and are in it just for him.
Word to the various directors and producers out there... if you are making a movie from a comic book make sure the comic or episode can stand on it's own first. Some comics just aren't meant for the big screen and it doesn't matter what kind of cast you assemble, you won't pull it off.
Also, a good plot helps.
