Dusty Baker refuses to apologize for his remarks yesterday concerning his belief that black and Latino players handle the heat better than white players. [link] Baker says he meant what he said and and he's "not going to take it back". He believes that darker skin is "more conducive to heat than it is to the lighter-skinned people. I don't see brothers running around burnt."

I'm white and I have no problem with what he said, but I'm not sure his argument holds water. I mean.... if you wear a black t-shirt out in the sun and heat it get's real hot, but if you wear a white t-shirt you stay much cooler. Isn't that elementary science? So it would stand to reason that white skin would keep you cooler provided you wear sunscreen to keep from getting burnt up. I'm just looking at it from a scientific point of view.

i am by no means an expert in evolution or genetic mutation, but i always thought that the darker skin pigmentation of blacks and latinos was simply a genetic change to protect the skin from the harsh sun. i don't know where i got that from but just wanted to get that out there.

Anyone who claims to be offended by his comments needs to be tied down naked in the desert near an ant mound an have honey spread over their privates.

I'm not sure how accurate his remarks are but I do know that if my pasty white ass is exposed to the sun for more than 40 minutes it gets sunburned. Given that black and Latino ancestory come from from hot climates (Africa, South and Central America), it isn't unreasonable to speculate that they are genetically better suited to heat. Why that should be offensive to some I don't know.

If he said that in his opinion blacks and Latinos are better at baseball because they are more used to swinging clubs and running from the police, then I could understand how some might be upset :)

I think Dusty must be right. He must be the smartest man in the world, because the Cubs are actually having a winning season. :)

Have we gotten to a point where you can't even say that white people get sunburnt without people thinking you are a racist.
