They Might Be Giants: Direct from Brooklyn
After 20 years of making oddball videos, you can finally own the (nearly) entire collection of TMBG videos on DVD.
The rock and roll duo known as They Might Be Giants had quite a year. After winning a Grammy for their theme song from Malcolm In The Middle, a documentary based on their career called Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns has gained wide critical acclaim and is up for a national theatrical release in May. They also released No!, an album created mainly for kids but also enjoyed by many people of all ages. Now They Might Be Giants, made up of John Flansburgh and John Linnell, is re-releasing its collection of groundbreaking music videos on DVD. The collection is titled Direct From Brooklyn, keeping true to their NYC roots.
The videos include “Don’t Let’s Start,” a favorite of many, which was listed as #88 of the Best Videos Of the Millennium by MTV in 2000, “Birdhouse In Your Soul,” which was a big hit in the UK, and many more. It also includes two clips from Tiny Toon Adventures, in which their songs “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” and “Particle Man” were featured. If you remember these from Tiny Toons, or maybe from a geography teacher with a good taste in music, then these videos will make you feel all nostalgic inside.
Aside from the videos that were on the VHS version, the DVD is chock-full of zany extras, including commentary from the band, bonus audio tracks from their 2001 album, Mink Car, A trailer for Gigantic, and a few quicktime videos for your DVD-Rom. Sadly, the DVD does not feature the video for “Boss of Me,” which comes as a surprise to me, since it was their biggest hit since 1990. I’m not sure, but the video might be on the Malcolm in the Middle: Season 1 DVD.
The DVD came out Tuesday, February 18, and you can buy it from Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, or Rykodisc Records (www.rykodisc.com). I highly recommend picking this up if you are any kind of music fan. Their music videos are truly mind-blowing and will leave you wanting more. You can also check out their latest albums, Mink Car and No!, in stores now.
