Military designs real force field; Star Trek fans ejaculate in unison

A new protection device has been developed by the UK military that uses an electronic force field that burns rockets and missiles before it hits the target. [link] It's used for tanks right now, but may soon be available for X-Wing and Tie Fighters. While the military is happy with the development, they are still upset that the force field can't actually hurt or kill anyone … yet. I personally think this a huge revelation in science and feel much safer now that this is being built. That is, as long as it doesn't get in the hands of the rebel alliance.
Rebel scum!!

Hey! Maybe we could surround the entire USA with it so those damn commies can't get in... I mean... *ahem* Yes, this is quite a development in military technology. Kudos to the U S of A. Oh yeah.

Maybe you didn't notice that this technology was developed in the UK not the USA even though it does say it clearly on the first line..... :P

Its not really a "force field" as sci-fi people would picture it. it is just a metal plating between the armor of the tank. When they copper (or whatever metal the projectile uses) cuts through the armor, it hits the electrically charged metal plating, causing a circut to be made, and then destroys the projectile.

The projectiles i speak of are shrapanel (sp?) or whatever, caused by the hit of a rocket or whatever, the armor stops the rocket, but it cant stop the little itty bitty metal pieces that can cut through feet of metal, and disable a tank completly.

Much different from the forcefield many people might have in mind. I was actually quite disappointed, i was expecting a clear blue "bizzz" sounding forcefield.
