If you were stuck on a desert island
NA
A question that is a lot deeper than most people think, "If you only had 5 CDs on a desert island, which would they be?" can reveal a lot about a person. So rather than give you one of my long winded articles about why this is, I will just tell you my favorite 5 albums and why and you can respond with your own favorites and thoughts. So it's a group article. Now I will shut up and start listing.
1. They Might Be Giants - Flood
Quirky, fun and a total imbodiment of what TMBG is all about, this is an indispensable album to own if you even like the band remotely. Songs like "Birdhouse in your Soul" and "Twistin" are true gems on an album that is littered with tremendous songs. And to think that I picked this up for only $4 in a used CD store...
2. Less Than Jake - Losing Streak
My first intro into ska music and by far my absolute favorite of the genre. Filled with lyrics that bite but are still intelligent, a kicking horn section and just long enough of a running time to make it the perfect CD before a date or class, Losing Streak stands as a pinnacle of third wave ska from a band who proved their worth with this, their first studio album. "Automatic" and "Rock & Roll Pizzaria" feature great lyrics and some of the best trumpet and horn work I've heard in almost any wave of ska and make this album great and one you can never tire of.
3. Weezer - Self Titled (The Blue Album)
I bought this CD way back in 1994 for "Buddy Holly" and then put it aside after a while. It was only last year that I found it again and gave it a listen and realized how much I had missed out on. A rediscovery of the band made me appreciate the early days of alternative rock. Poppy, catchy, but still meaningful and with a lot of heart, this is an album that any fan of true rock shouldn't miss. Great guitar solos and haunting lyrics ("Only in Dreams" still sends chills down my spine) turned the Blue Album into a legendary one, that just begs to be played at full volume while you are driving down the road in the summer time.
4. Aimee Mann - Bachelor No. 2
Her mellow and haunting voice underscored "Magnolia" and I went searching for her ever since I saw the movie. What I found was her latest CD, and it was incredible. Mann is poigant, witty and captures a lot of deeper feelings in a simple 3 minute song. "Ghost town" is the ultimate song and even some of the stuff from Magnolia is on the album which gives it a very nice touch. With all the other guy alternative rockers out there, it's nice to hear from a female now and again.
5. Rage Against The Machine - Self Titled
Angry, fierce and deep on many, many levels, this is probably Rage's best work to date. And given that they have disbanded, it will remain as their best work I'm sure. With such an explosive debut CD like this one, Rage proved that rock could still have meaning and that it didn't have to be about love and girls. Tracks like "Killing in the name of" and "Wake Up" speak of so many important social and political issues that to list them all would require a whole new column itself. If you are ever looking for something more alternative than Creed (yes, people call this festering pile of puke called a band "alternative") than this is a great CD to get into Rage Against The Machine.
That's it, summed up neatly. It was tough to come up with this list, because I have a lot of CDs that are incredibly good but I don't know if I'd want them as one of my only 5 (RHCP Californication ALMOST made this list). I'm curious to see what other KungFoo-ers pick as their favorites, or feel towards mine. Comments anyone?
